Travelling by train to Zaanse Schans? From Koog-Zaandijk station, you virtually walk past the Windmill Museum, where you can learn all about the colourful and economically important history of the windmills. It features fascinating exhibitions, beautiful scale models, paintings, age-old artefacts and videos. Today’s Zaan region has just a few windmills left. In around 1800, there were about 600. Many people are unaware that there are many different types of windmill, each designed for a different production process and constructed very differently. After visiting our museum, the windmills at Zaanse Schans take on a whole new life! They combine nature, landscape and historic architecture in a single building. The exhibitions in the museum change frequently and there are some great activities for children. Of course you will see how the millers used to work and what was produced in the windmills.
